“Mothers hold their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever.”

March 8th is celebrated in many cultures not only as International Women's Day but also as a special occasion to honor mothers. A time to recognise the women who raised us and all those who shape our world. It’s a day to appreciate their love, sacrifices, and dedication. These remarkable women invest their hearts and strength into guiding us through life. Motherhood is both rewarding and demanding, and while one day can’t capture all they do, it serves as a reminder of their sleepless nights, tireless work, and unconditional love.

While today serves as a reminder to honor our mothers, we should express our gratitude every day. Their love and sacrifices remain constant, and we must never take them for granted. Simple gestures and kind words can go a long way in returning their love.

To every mother who works tirelessly, stays up with a sick child, and puts others first. To every mother who raised a child alone or welcomed children who weren’t her own with open arms. And to every mother who’s no longer with us but continues to guide and inspire from above.

Today, we celebrate all mothers, heroes who shape our lives with their endless love.

"A mother’s arms are more comforting than anyone else’s." – Princess Diana

Reflecting on the profound influence of a mother’s love, I think of Michael Jackson, whose life was deeply shaped by his mother, Katherine Jackson. Michael often spoke of how her unwavering love, guidance, and sacrifices guided him throughout his life.

Katherine Jackson, a strong Black American mother in the 1960s, raised her large family with her husband, Joseph, in a modest home in Gary, Indiana. Despite battling polio, which she saw as a test from God, Katherine’s faith and resilience never wavered. She had a beautiful voice, which Michael often credited as the source of his own musical talent, adding "and of course, from God."

Katherine was the one who convinced Joseph to listen to Michael sing at the tender age of five years old, always believing in and supporting her children’s dreams. Her love and wisdom shaped Michael deeply, and in his own words, he said:

“My mother was a great provider. The lessons she taught us were invaluable. Kindness, love, and consideration for other people headed her list. Don’t hurt people. Never beg. Never freeload. She always wanted us to give, but she never wanted us to ask or beg. That’s the way she is, I wish we could all be more like Mom.”– Michael Jackson, Moonwalk

Katherine’s lessons of kindness, love, and selflessness were the foundation of both Michael’s career and his humanitarian work. His desire to give back and make the world a better place was deeply rooted in the values she instilled in him.

“She taught me that my talent for singing and dancing was as much God’s work as a beautiful sunset or storm that left snow for children to play in."

Michael’s gratitude for his mother was evident in everything he did. As he shared in his autobiography, every album was dedicated to her. He honored her not just with words, but through his actions, music, humanitarian efforts, and character, all of which were a tribute to the strong woman who raised him.

One of the most beautiful ways Michael expressed his love for his mother was through a poem:

“Mother dear, you gave me life

Because of you, no struggle or strife

You gave me joy and position

Cared for me without condition

And if I ever change the world

It’s from the emotions you’ve unfurled

Your compassion is so sweet and dear

Your finest feelings I can hear

I can sense your faintest notion

The wondrous magic of your love potion

And now that I have come so far

Met with every king and czar

Encountered every color and creed

Of every passion, every greed

I go back to that starry night

With not a fear from muscle or might

You taught me how to stand and fight

Every single wrong and right

Every day without a hold

I will treasure what you’ve mold

I will remember every kiss

Your sweet words I’ll never miss

No matter where I go from here

You’re in my heart, my mother dear.”

— Michael Jackson

These words remind us that, at his core, Michael was a son who cherished his mother’s love and wisdom. Her influence shaped him not only as an artist but as a compassionate human with a deep sense of responsibility to the world.

As we reflect on his life, let’s remember that his story is ultimately one of a mother’s love. Katherine Jackson’s nurturing and guidance were the foundation that allowed his son to become the humanitarian we admired, learning to give without expectation and always striving to make the world a better place.

“I don’t think I could ask for anything more in life than a son like Michael.” – Katherine Jackson, Never Can Say Goodbye

Today, as we celebrate all mothers, let’s remember the incredible impact a mother’s love can have on not just one child, but on the entire world. As Michael beautifully said, "If I ever change the world, it’s thanks to you, mother dear." We are who we are because of the people who raised us.

Let’s cherish our mothers every day, not just today, and never forget to show our gratitude for their endless love and sacrifice. As we reflect on the love and sacrifices of our mothers, let's all think about how we can pass on that kindness. Whether it’s through a simple gesture, a kind word, or a larger act of compassion, the world needs this light.

Wishing a joyful Mother’s and Women’s Day to all the incredible women whose love and strength shape our world!
